The Deputy Commissioner of Shivamogga, R. Selvamani, has called on farmers to get their cattle vaccinated against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). Speaking at a meeting about the upcoming vaccination drive, Selvamani emphasized the importance of vaccination in preventing the spread of the disease. The campaign, which is part of the National Animal Disease Control program, will take place from September 26 to October 25 throughout the district. The Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry will be responsible for administering the vaccines to all cattle.
Foot-and-mouth disease is a highly contagious viral infection that affects cloven-hoofed animals, particularly cattle, pigs, sheep, and goats. The disease causes fever, painful sores on the mouth and hooves, and can lead to a decrease in milk production and weight loss in infected animals. It can be transmitted through direct contact with infected animals or through contaminated feed, water, or equipment. Vaccination is an effective measure to control and prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease.
The Deputy Commissioner stressed the need for 100% coverage during the vaccination drive and called on all officers and the farming community to work together to achieve this goal. He also highlighted that pet shop owners must register their businesses and pay a registration fee of ₹5,000 under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Pet Shops) Rules 2018. So far, 15 firms have filed applications for registration, and operating without registration will result in legal action.
During the previous round of the vaccination drive, the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry achieved 95% progress by vaccinating 5,54,010 cattle. Currently, the department has procured 6,39,250 doses of the vaccine for the upcoming campaign.
It is crucial for farmers to prioritize the health of their livestock and adhere to the vaccination schedule to protect against foot-and-mouth disease. By cooperating with the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, farmers can contribute to the successful containment of the disease and ensure the well-being of their cattle.
