According to a study conducted by Headway, a technology company that connects mental health care providers to insurance companies, the network of mental health providers accepting Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) insurance has seen an 18% increase since 2021. Headway found that 70% of therapists do not accept insurance, and one of the main reasons for this is the administrative burden associated with accepting insurance.
Headway’s co-founder and CEO, Andrew Adams, explained that the medical insurance system was not designed with mental health providers in mind. The traditional health insurance system is built around the medical world, with large hospital groups handling insurance claims. In contrast, the therapy world operates differently.
Headway launched in Texas in 2021 with a few hundred mental health providers on board, and now has a network of 4,500. The platform allows therapists to accept BCBSTX insurance, as well as other insurance providers such as Aetna, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare.
The study also revealed that Headway’s network in Texas now includes 12 new languages and 141 new rural zip codes. This means that mental health providers who speak those languages and work in those rural communities now accept BCBSTX insurance, whereas they did not before Headway entered the market.
Headway’s platform not only benefits patients by providing easier access to care, but also offers opportunities for mental health providers. By streamlining the insurance process and connecting therapists with patients, Headway helps therapists see more patients and expand their businesses. The platform allows users to search for therapists in their area, learn about their specialties, accepted insurance, and schedule appointments.
