Nathan Smith, a 31-year-old man from Ashby, has shared his story of discovering a heart condition after experiencing terrifying symptoms. Since his teenage years, Nathan believed he had some sort of health issue, but his concerns were dismissed as stress and anxiety. However, at the age of 21, after undergoing various ultrasounds, he began experiencing alarming symptoms.
Nathan’s hearing started to become fuzzy, and his vision felt distorted as if his eyes were clicking between slots instead of moving smoothly. Feeling like he was going to pass out, he was rushed back to the hospital. It was then that he was informed that an ultrasound had revealed a tiny leak in his aortic valve. This diagnosis led to a major heart surgery in 2019 to replace the valve.
Fortunately, the surgery was successful, and Nathan experienced no post-operative pain. However, he did notice the sound of his mechanical heart ticking in moments of quiet. This experience made him realize the preciousness of life and the importance of early detection and treatment of heart conditions.
Now, working for a wealth management company in Leicester, Nathan is encouraging others to be aware of unusual symptoms that could indicate a heart problem. He supports the British Heart Foundation’s Spotlight On campaign, which aims to raise awareness and funds for heart conditions.
Nathan also wants to reassure people that, thanks to modern medicine, even small problems can be identified and treated before they escalate. Nonetheless, he urges individuals to understand that heart conditions can affect anyone at any age.
The British Heart Foundation’s recent survey revealed that people tend to underestimate the prevalence and seriousness of heart and circulatory diseases. While around 7.6 million people in the UK are affected by these conditions, only three percent of respondents were aware of the actual chances of developing a heart problem.
