Kazakhstan and GE Healthcare Sign Framework Agreement to Boost Medical Technology Sector

The government of Kazakhstan and GE Healthcare have recently signed a framework agreement with a projected investment of over $60 billion. This agreement focuses on four key areas, including the localization of medical equipment production. The signing took place during a meeting between President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Rob Walton, the President of GE Healthcare for Europe, Middle East, and Africa.

One of the main goals outlined in the agreement is the development of the Centralized National Digital Archive of Clinical Images of Kazakhstan. This archive aims to simplify the management of patient data, ultimately reducing service costs. By implementing this system, the government seeks to enhance the efficiency of healthcare services and improve patient care.

Additionally, GE Healthcare plans to establish the GE Healthcare Academy at Astana Medical University, which will provide educational programs to enhance the skills and qualifications of healthcare professionals. The academy is expected to commence operations in October and will contribute to the development of a highly skilled workforce in the medical field.

The localization of medical equipment production is another significant aspect of the agreement. GE Healthcare aims to produce ultrasound machines locally, followed by the production of CT scanners, angiographs, and mammographs. This step aligns with Kazakhstan’s objective of increasing domestic production of pharmaceuticals and medical equipment to 50% by 2025.

GE Healthcare, a global leader in medical technology, operates in more than 140 countries. With revenues of $19 billion in 2022 and a market capitalization of $34.5 billion, the company brings extensive expertise and resources to support the development of Kazakhstan’s healthcare sector.

By forging this partnership with GE Healthcare, the Kazakh government aims to bolster its medical technology sector, improve access to advanced healthcare solutions, and contribute to the long-term well-being of its citizens.
