HIMSS Recognizes Health Systems for Innovative Use of Information Technology

HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society) recently announced the recipients of its Davies Award of Excellence. This award acknowledges health systems that have demonstrated innovative use of information and technology to deliver improved care, enhance health outcomes, and provide a better patient experience.

In September, Intermountain Health was recognized with the Davies Award for its groundbreaking work in tackling conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic kidney disease, and multimodal pain management. The organization, which recently achieved the prestigious triple Stage 7 designation, showcased its evidence-based quality improvement efforts through various case studies. Dr. Farukh Usmani, the medical director of digital technology services at Intermountain, attributes the achievement to teamwork, leadership, collaboration, and the effective utilization of informatics and information technology.

Northern Light Health, based in Brewer, Maine, earned its second Davies Award. The healthcare system, which comprises 10 hospitals and 37 primary care locations, leveraged analytics to enhance patient engagement, improve provider experience, and ultimately achieve better health outcomes. By focusing on EHR optimization and patient safety, Northern Light Health demonstrated its commitment to delivering high-quality patient care. April Giard, the chief digital and innovation officer, expressed pride in the organization’s culture of collaboration between IT, informatics, and clinical teams.

University of Missouri Health Care was recognized with a third Davies Award, making it one of only four organizations to achieve this distinction. The case studies presented by MU Health Care showcased successful initiatives aimed at reducing unnecessary transfers to the pediatric ICU and preventing hospital-associated pressure injuries. Deb Dow, the chief information officer, emphasized the collective effort involved in their mission of saving and improving lives. The award acknowledges the health care professionals within MU Health Care who effectively leverage data to drive improvements in care delivery.

Overall, the HIMSS Davies Award of Excellence acknowledges the remarkable achievements of health systems in leveraging information and technology for better patient outcomes. It highlights the importance of teamwork, leadership, collaboration, and the effective utilization of informatics and information technology in delivering high-quality care.
