Solutions in cold chain management

Ortho Clinical Diagnostics (OCD) India, has been existent for more than 25 years. The company operates as an independently managed division of Johnson & Johnson Ltd India. With the merger of Johnson & Johnson Clinical Diagnostics and Ortho Diagnostic systems in 1997, the division revised its India strategy and made some far-reaching changes. As a result, OCD decided to:

1) Offer the same line of products manufactured and marketed in Europe and in the US for the Indian market as well.

2) To focus on the two segments i.e. transfusion medicine and clinical laboratories.

The change enabled OCD India to bring in semi and high-end automation products in its target segments of Clinical Labs and Transfusion Medicine.

The Vitros DT semi automated analyser is well established in the Indian market for small to medium size laboratories both in Metros and A Class towns. As each slide is individually packed, small labs can do all their tests including rare parameters like esoteric tests, ammonia, lithium, etc in house. The higher version Vitros 250 auto-analyser is targeted at premium hospitals in the metros.

The present installed base for Vitros DT 60 II Chemistry System is approximately 300 and that of Vitros 250 is approximately 40. In the last 18 months, the installed base of Vitros ECi with enhanced chemiluminescence technology used for Immunodiagnostic testing has grown from 5 to 15 analysers. The value added solutions of OCD, more than compensate for the perceived extra cost. Very soon OCD India would be launching an Elisa kit for HCV Antigen and Track-C an Elisa kit for quantitative estimation of HCV viral load.

Another area of focus is cold chain management. Practically all diagnostic products need to be stored in a controlled temperature and humidity conditions.
