GM Modi Hospital

Patients from far and wide come for treatment at the 100-bed GM Modi Hospital

Located at Saket in New Delhi, GM Modi is a 100-bed multi speciality hospital recognised for its advanced healthcare treatments. The OPD screens approximately 5,000 patients every month. The Hospital started its operations in the year 1989 and it plays a significant role in maintaining the healthcare system of Delhi. The Hospital Corporation of America had initially designed this Hospital, built on nine acres in a prime location of South Delhi.

Focusing on Specialities

The Hospital was originally planned as a 500-bed multi speciality hospital in the 1980s. Technical glitches, some infrastructural design flaws and lack of funds resulted eventually in the establishment of only a 100-bed hospital. "Patients from far and wide come in this hospital to avail the modernised medical facilities present here," says Vinay Lazarus, Director- Administration, GM Modi Hospital. The hospital started primary care way back in 1989 but has now moved on to secondary care.

The hospital is well equipped with modernised healthcare facilities to offer the best healthcare opportunities for their patients. Some of the specialties are spinal surgery, dental care, oncology, cosmetic surgery, urology, neuro surgery, ophthalmology, nephrology, paediatric surgery, reconstructive surgery, cardiology, psychiatry and gastroenterology.

A 24-hour fully-automated lab caters for biochemistry, microbiology, haematology, histopathology and cytology under supervision of senior pathologists. The hospital also specialises in laser skin advancements. Some of the laser skin treatments offered are peels, hair reduction permanently, birth mark and tattoo removal, fillers, botox, skin brightening, skin tags, moles and warts removal and skin photo rejuvenation. "Experienced dermatologists of the hospital handle all kinds of skin-related problem," adds Lazarus.

The hospital now benefits from various super specialties like nephrology- dialysis, gastrointestinal surgeries, joint replacements and level II & III neonatal care. The dialysis unit has separate positive antigen area with state of art fresenius machines and conducts around 700 dialysis per month.

USP

"The USP of the hospital is 'affordable world class healthcare'. The hospital boasts of patient-friendly staff and doctors in peaceful environs. We ensure there are no overstays and that patient- specific treatment is imparted at all times. Patient-centric attitude and hardcore service value are epitome of the hospital," shares Lazarus.

Use of IT

New initiatives being fostered by the hospital is primarily being worked upon IT-enabled solutions. The hospital has a full-fledged Hospital Information System (HIS) developed by Akhil Systems for which a sum of Rs 15 lakh is been invested. This system was implemented two years back.

All departments are linked through WLAN. ERP/SAP solutions are being tried out for future use. "We are working on developing a unique user-friendly Electronic Medical Record (EMR) solution along with other seamless Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software," says Lazarus. Patient Archiving and Communication Solution (PACS) is a challenging area for the hospital where research and studies are carried in order to arrive at the most cost-effective module. The total amount lined up for this is Rs 30 lakh. The hospital aims to become a paperless and film-less hospital by 2009.

CSR

The hospital recently launched Dayawati Modi Ayurveda Vaidyashala and Panchakarma Centre for promoting a natural wellness regime with a holistic approach. The hospital has a daily free OPD and 10 per cent of in-patient beds are reserved for the indigent category. Poor patients are provided completely free treatment, including complex surgeries and ICU care. The hospital is also a part of Delhi School Health Scheme (DSHC) wherein 20,000 students of Government schools in Delhi are provided with annual health check-ups. Mobile health scheme for the slum clusters in Delhi will be initiated from January 2009 in association with Delhi Government.

Hurdles to Overcome

The biggest challenge to the hospital is to provide most modern technological solutions to the society but at competitive costs. Besides this, inappropriate usage of IT by the hospital staff and a reluctance to learn and deliver through a new IT solution adds to the challenge. "The hospital conducts regular training for the staff and we are hopeful that it would soon overcome this challenge and encouraging the staff to use IT at the optimum level," sighs Lazarus.

Future Developments

The hospital plans to open up a boutique birthing centre—catering to all mother child needs under one roof. A modern cardiothoracic centre offering world class care at competitive prices is also anvil. "The hospital has massive expansion plans in place for which Dr BK Modi has pledged to invest Rs 200 crore," reveals Lazarus. The hospital also intend to launch medical and nursing schools along with day care surgery centres, rehabilitation centres, boutique healthcare for cosmetology, wellness, lifestyle and dentistry. The expansion plans are being worked out, keeping in mind the international standards. Plans are afoot to build a 550-bed hospital with funding from group companies within the existing complex. "The existing services would continue to function as they are. The building which was left unfinished would be taken up as modern construction and would be merged gradually with the existing services," says Lazarus.
