IMEGA SOFT: Capacitive Pad

MEGA SOFT, a brand name of Megadyne Medical Products Inc (USA), is a large capacitive pad that eliminates the need for an individual dispersive pad that may become a safety problem if it becomes tented during a procedure. The bulk resistivity of this unique capacitive pad ensures that current densities are kept to a clinically safe level such that no pad site burns occur.

The MEGA SOFT provides patients with an additional benefit not provided by any return electrode, an OR table pressure reduction pad. As the patient can lay immobile on the operating table for an extended length of time, pressure in the OR can be very dangerous for a patient. Pressure will with time cause the capillaries to collapse (how much time it takes is dependent on the physical health of the patient), depriving the tissue of both oxygen and nutrients. This causes the tissue to die and a pressure sore starts to form. Pressure sores will visibly manifest themselves in as little as two hours or it may take as long as two days after surgery. Other extrinsic factors such as shear, friction and heat may also contribute to the formation of pressure sores
