Inverness: On Growth Trajectory

Through acquisitions, the company has built a broad portfolio of market-leading consumer and professional diagnostics

In as little over six years, Inverness Medical Innovations Inc has become one of the main players in the worldwide diagnostics market. Through a series of acquisitions, the company has built a broad portfolio of market-leading consumer and professional diagnostics. Inverness Medical has significant experience and competency in evaluating, executing and integrating acquired businesses, technologies and intellectual property. Following their strategic acquisitions, Inverness has gained the necessary critical mass and foundation to capitalise on growth in the markets it serves transforming Inverness Medical into a global leader in point-of-care diagnostics.

With focus on women's health, blood-borne pathogens, oncology, respiratory and infectious diseases and cardiology, the current product portfolio targets more than 100 disease states and conditions. Some of the Inverness medical professional brands include Biosite Triage, Cholestech, Clearview, BinaxNOW, Determine, and Inverness Medical TestPack +Plus.

As the market for innovative cardiology markers continues to grow rapidly, Inverness Medical is investing heavily in cardiology diagnostics— over $130 million since 2004. Presenting patients often need immediate intervention and ruling out myocardial ischemia and infarction is now regarded just as important as a positive diagnosis. The focus is on developing rapid tests which can be performed by nurses and physicians rather than central laboratories. The portfolio has recently been expanded through the Biosite and Cholestech acquisitions. Biosite brings in the groundbreaking Triage range used in 70 per cent of US hospitals and includes BNP, while Cholestech's point-of-care cardio and liver failure tests have a (13.1 per cent) market share of US physician office laboratories.

With a worldwide concern over infectious diseases, there is increasing demand for Inverness Medical rapid tests for use in clinic situations. The broad range includes the world's leading rapid determine HIV test, along with diagnostic products key in aiding the quick diagnosis of malaria, hepatitis B & syphilis. Similarly, Inverness Medical is playing a role in the fight against hospital and community.

Acquired infections with rapid microbiology tests for C difficile and others.

As recently as January 2008, Inverness Medical announced that its acquisition of Panbio Ltd had been successfully completed. Panbio, with its headquarter in Brisbane, Australia, develops and manufactures diagnostic tests for use in the diagnosis and management of a broad range of infectious diseases. In particular, Panbio's leadership position in dengue fever diagnostics complements Inverness Medical's existing product portfolio for the rapid diagnosis of blood borne pathogens.

With major Research and Development facilities in the US, UK, Germany and Israel, and manufacturing sites in the UK, China, Japan, Israel and the US, Inverness Medical Innovations is truly global in scope. By investing strongly in R&D and intellectual property (8 per cent of revenues in 2007) —the company uses this to bring tin innovative new products, leading the way in point-of- carediagnostics. Inverness Medical has a vision to develop, manufacture and market comprehensive rapid diagnostic products for assessing critical and chronic conditions, enabling individuals to improve health and quality of life. This commitment means that when your body talks, it could well be an Inverness Medical test that translates.
