wellbeing
Dr LH Hiranandani, Mumbai has launched a unique cardiac rehabilitation centre

in Chester, Dublin, Hong Kong and Singapore. Cardiac rehabilitation is an exercise
and educational programme designed to improve a quality of life".
Dr Sujit Chatterjee, CEO, Dr LH Hiranandani Hospital, informed, "Heart
diseases are no longer related with old age alone. Recent studies have shown
that an increasing number of younger people are affected by heart problem due
to stress and altered lifestyle."
The cardiac rehabilitation at Hiranandani Hospital is a comprehensive medically
supervised programme and is designed to help patients regain physical and psychological
wellbeing through exercise, education, counseling, risk factor reduction and
learning ways to improve health related quality of life.
There are mainly four components of the process of cardiac rehabilitation: medical
evaluation, exercise training, nutritional education and lifestyle modification.
"In the long run, the Centre helps you to improve physical fitness and
exercise tolerance, reduces future risk of heart disease, build up confidence,
improve dietary habits and lifestyle, speed up psychological aspects of recovery
and mainly increase awareness of heart diseases. The programme is tailor-made
to each patient's needs and health condition," said Dr Chaterjee.
- Phase I (in the hospital): It begins
with chest physiotherapy, breathing exercise, incentive spirometry,
no strenuous activities and gradually progress to walking and limited
stair climbing.
- Phase II (early recovery): This
phase begins soon after hospital discharge and generally lasts from
4-16 weeks. During this phase, activity level is gradually increased.
- Phase III (Ongoing recovery): This
is a long-term maintenance programme to follow for the rest of life
by focusing on life style modification, risk factor reduction and exercise.
