Mohali Gets Dedicated Cancer Centre
The Indus Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali, recently inaugurated a dedicated
cancer hospital in the region. Indus Cancer Institute commissioned a radiotherapy
equipment, a dedicated cancer pathology laboratory and a rural Indus cancer
detection center in Malwa region of Punjab was announced.
The radiotherapy machine is reportedly the first high energy medical linear
accelerator (15mV) in Punjab. Dr KS Behgal, Head, Department of Radiation Oncology
at the Institute, informed, that most of the cancer centers in Punjab and North
India use either outdated cobalt machines or low or medium energy linear accelerators.
"We, on the other hand, have a dual energy linear accelerator which is
the most advanced machine installed in Punjab so far," he added.
The Cancer Histopathology Unit, managed by Dr Charandeep Singh, provides the
facilities of immunohistochemistry, tumour markers (blood tests detecting cancer)
and has already begun the process of acquiring frozen section equipment. "With
the opening of a dedicated cancer laboratory, the samples of blood and biopsy
would be tested here, which were earlier being sent to Mumbai and other cities
for testing," said Dr Singh.
