4th Infectious Disease Certificate Course PD Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai

August 26-September 02, 2007

Dr F D Dastur

India is one of the largest hubs for infectious disease (ID), many of them being preventable. However, the awareness about the right diagnosis and treatment of ID is poor in the country, said Dr FD Dastur, Course Co-ordinator at the 4th Infectious Disease Certificate Course of PD Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai. The objectives of the course were to create awareness about the importance of ID, to establish a differential diagnosis and initiate an appropriate diagnostic evaluation, to rationally and effectively manage common but challenging ID problems and to understand the relevant areas of microbiology, immunology and pharmacology.

The conference was organised in association with Henry Ford Health Systems. The various themes of the conference were febrille illness, TB, ICU and 'Break the routine'. The various diseases on which knowledge was imparted were dengue, leptospirosis, enteric fever and MDRTB.

"There is a need to have more of such courses in India as the knowledge for detecting and treatment infectious disease is low," said Dr Camilla Rodrigues, Microbiologist, Hinduja Hospital. Said Dr Tanu Singal, Consultant Paeditrician in ID, Hinduja Hospital, "We need to have guidelines on treating ID."

Over 80 delegates from across the country participated in the course. For Cythia Martinej-Capolino from Henry Ford Health Systems, who came on a rotational course, “Knowledge about detecting and treating the various IDs are essential as we get to treat patients from various nationalities."
