The Beats of John Punnose
Meet John Punnose, CEO, Madras Medical Mission, Chennai
who believes to be in constant touch with management studies and unwinds himself
by spending time with his family
I
see to it that I never take my work home," asserts John Punnose when quizzed
about his de-stressing mantras. After a hard day's work, he relaxes himself
by spending time with his two daughters, Deepti (12) and Aditi (7) and wife,
Pearly.
Pearly is a trained pianist and his daughters are currently following her footsteps.
Punnose himself used to play the flute back in his school and college days.
The family also unwind themselves by listening to gospel music. "Now I
have been out of practice with the flute," he informs. An ardent cricket
fan, Punnose is disappointed by the recent performance of India in the World
Cup. "I was in the US at that time and would sit up late night just to
watch the match. Their performance was really disappointing," he adds.
Hailing from a defence background, the young Punnose was also into sports like
billiards and football.
Punnose believes in keeping in touch with the latest management practices which
is why he is passionate about pursuing various management courses. Punnose also
loves to read management books. He was at Stanford Business School, last year,
pursuing an executive programme for not-for-profit leaders and presently he
is pursuing a course called the Accelerated Management Programme under the IIMA.
"I always want to keep in touch with the changing times. In fact, when
I was the CEO of Apollo Hospital, the Reddy family would often remark that it
is my love for studies that is the secret of my success and it is fun studying
with young people and discussing case studies," he says. Not only this,"I
used to read a lot of Robin Cook, but that was only when I used to travel during
flights. Now, I hardly travel," he adds.
Last Time You
Went out for a movie
- That was ages ago. Actually, my father-in-law was with
us for four years. Since he was sick, we used to generally stay in the house.
He has passed away recently.
Took your wife for a quiet dinner
- If I have to go out for dinner I go with my two daughters
and with my wife. This gets to happen every Saturday either at the Chola Shereton
or Mainland China.
Watched a soap opera
Went on a drive
- Recently on a holiday along with my family, I drove up
to Mahabalipuram for two days.
Jumped with joy
- Last year, when I was at Stanford, I really had a nice
time. Spent some good times and made a lot of friends.
Blasted somebody
- Yesterday, I blasted my wife. We had a difference of opinion
over an issue. Otherwise, I see to it that I never blast anybody from the
office.
Went on holiday
- As far as long holiday is concerned, I went out with my
family to Kerela somewhere in January.
Went to your children's school
- That way I am a very bad parent. I hardly get time to
go to their school.
Received a compliment
- Yesterday I received a compliment from my wife. I always
get compliments.
Were down with illness
- I had a terrible backache from the past two days, so today
got a check up from the hospital.
Cooked for your family
- I cannot cook! Even when my wife is not there, I somehow
manage something from the hospital.
