New Venture

Ooty to Get a Multi-speciality Hospital

The first phase will be spread in one acre, followed by II phase which will cover a sprawling 40 acres.

Ooty, the queen of hill stations, is all set to get a super-speciality hospital by this August end. The 200-bed hospital is being built at a cost of Rs 100 crore, on a plot where earlier stood a hotel. The Hospital is the first part of the chain of hospitals to have a pan India presence by the name of 'Ooty Hospitals Pvt Ltd'.

The Hospital is built by Dr Ramesh Babu, who was previously the Administrative Director of Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC), Madurai. Currently, the Hospital is 100 per cent owned by Dr Babu, the Chairman and Managing Director of the Hospital, who is also open to joint ventures in the future. When asked why Ooty of all places, Dr Babu replies, "The Queen is currently very sick. There is not a single super-speciality or trauma care hospital in the whole of Nilgiris."

Whenever there is an emergency, people have to rush to Coimbatore, which is a full three-hour drive from Ooty. “People are concentrating more in the cities and less in periphery, so there is acute shortage of proper healthcare delivery at such places," he added.

Work has already been started for Phase I, whereby 100 beds will be commisioned. Phase I, which will have 20 ICUs, will concentrate on trauma and emergency care and will include specialities like cardio-thoracic, neurology, nephrology, gynaecology, orthopaedics, cardiology, traumatology, to name just a few.

The second phase (100 beds more) will be a health resort spread in the area of 40 acres and will concentrate on rehabilitation, post-surgery recovery and medical tourism. The work for phase II will start in January 2008 and it will be commissioned before the end of the same year.

"In the next two-three years, we plan to have a helipad too for the promotion of medical tourism. Also, I have received more than 4,000 applications so far for various posts at the Hospital. Screening is still an ongoing process," Dr Babu informs.

The combined staff requirement for both the Hospital and the Health Resort is around 600.
