Asian Heart Collaborates with UK Univ
There is some good news for professionals looking out for a course in cardiovascular
rehabilitation (CVR), as the Asian Heart Institute (AHI), Mumbai in collaboration
with the Chester University, UK, have introduced a six-month part time postgraduate
certification programme in cardio vascular rehabilitation. The course provides
knowledge, research and practical experience of the latest methods and techniques
in cardiovascular rehabilitation as per established international standards.
The course will be conducted at the hospital and apart from Indian experts,
faculty will also include professionals from the UK university teaching at AHI.
The students after successful completion of the course will be awarded a Certificate
in Cardiovascular Rehabilitation from the University of Chester, England, an
accreditation certificate from the Royal College of Physicians, London and membership
of the British Association of Cardiac Rehabilitation.
Commencing from September 2007, this is a first of its kind course in India,
as there is no professional internationally-recognised training programme to
qualify as a CVR practitioner in India. This prompted AHI to introduce this
course. "There is an increasing need for Indian professionals in CVR in
hospitals, clinics and health centers. Currently, over 60 million cardiac patients
are there in India which is expected to increase to 100 million by 2010,"
says Dr Aashish Contractor, Head, Department of Preventive Cardiology &
Rehabilitation, AHI. The certificate course requires the study of three eight-week
modules, namely on cardiovascular diseases, treatment and rehabilitation; functional
anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system; exercise testing, prescription
and programming in CVR.
Each module will be assessed by a 5,000-word hand-written assignment. People
who are eligible include doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists
and senior nurses. For more information log on to www.chester.ac.uk/cens.
