MV Hospital for Diabetes, Chennai has introduced a revolutionary
wound healing therapy for diabetic foot wounds called Vacuum Assisted Closure
(VAC). This has come as a boon to the dreaded problem of delayed healing of
diabetic wounds, especially resulting from foot complications which could even
lead to amputation. According to Dr Vijay Viswanathan, Managing Director, MV
Hospital for Diabetes and Diabetes Research Centre, "Amputation of foot
due to diabetic foot complications has been increasing alarmingly among the
Indian population. Early care and faster healing would considerably improve
this condition. VAC has come as a timely therapy which reduces trauma and also
the costs of treatment." In the first patient the hospital used the technique,
the wound healing has been faster by at least 40 per cent, saving hospitalisation
cost and time. "The indirect saving has been that the patient has gotten
back to normal work life in 20 days. Without VAC, he could have spent anywhere
between 40-50 days in the hospital," he added.
"In addition to the saving of cost and time, another big advantage is the
psychological reassurance that the patient and the family gain from the therapy
when dealing with the trauma of delayed wound healing in diabetics," he
added.
VAC was introduced by Kinetic Concepts, Inc, USA, in 1995 and is today a widely
preferred therapy in the US, Europe and other countries for healing various
types of wounds including diabetic wounds. It is an innovative technology device
specifically created and developed to treat a variety of chronic and acute wounds.
