Heliprobe TM is a "Urea breath test"

Since Barry Marshall described the Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) and its role in different gastrointestinal diseases, an intense research effort has developed different diagnostic methods. The only nonivasive test method that can be clinically used as a diagnostic tool for on-going infection with H.pylori and post-eradication follow-up is the "urea breath test". Different serological tests are available, but they cannot determine the actual status of the infection and can therefore only be used for screening tests. With the Radprobe TM, a cost-effective test is available, easy to use in the doctor's office.

How does Heliprobe TM work?

The Urea Breath Test method (UBT) Is based on the fact that the bacteria H. pylori produces an enzyme, urease, which catalyzes the hydrolysis of the urea molecule into ammonium and carbon dioxide.H. plyori requires the alkaline ammonium in order to establish an optimal local mucosal environment within the acidic environment of the stomach. The urea compound is an endogenous substance that contains one carbon atom, normally C, which can be replaced by its isotope C or C. Heliprobe TM uses the isotope C which has very low B-radioactive emission. The radioactive dose used for a Heliprobe TM test is 1 uCurie, which is significantly less than the radioactive dose given at a normal X-ray examination of the stomach, and equal to a few glasses of orange juice.

A Helicap is ingested with 50 ml of water. If an infection with H. pylori is present in the stomach, the "living" bacteria produces the enzyme "urease" that metabolizes the C-urea into ammonium and carbon dioxide containing the C-labelled atoms. The carbon dioxide will be assimilated through the mucosa into the blood stream and transported to the lungs where it is exhaled. By collecting the exhaled carbon dioxide in the BreathCardTM, the amount of Co2 produced in the stomach can be measured with the Heliprobe TM instrument. If the patient is not infected, no metabolization of urea will occur and therefore no CO2 can be detected with the Heliprobe TM system. In this case the unmetabolized C urea will pass along the digestive canal to be excreted in the urine. If the Heliprobe TM system detects Co2 this is diagnostic evidence of an ongoing infection with living H.pylori. Heliprobe TM is developed for primary diagnosis of H. pylori, as well as for follow-up after eradication treatment.

Laboratory and Clinical Evaluation

To ensure equivalent results comparable with sophisticated, well-established laboratory techniques used for scientific purposes, the following comparison between Heliprobe TM and liquid scintillation for C detection was made. A Laboratory set-up (simulating the patient) with controlled parameters according to figure 1 was established. The result of the comparison was statistically analyzed applying linear regression. The outcome of the analysis shows a regression line with high correlation between these methods as presented in figure 2. Clinical Validation studies involving more than 400 patients has also been performed at the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden.

BodyGuard 323 multi programmable infusion pump offers advanced facilities in infusion pump. The pump has different user selectable programs like Continuous infusion, TPN, 25 Steps, Sinusoidal and PCA. Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) is a program used for patients who require IV pain management or epidural analgesia. Pain management is undertaken by delivering a continuous basal rate in combination with pre programmed boluses. The pump will deliver the boluses corresponding to the preset time intervals. All attempts to obtain boluses are stored in the pump memory. The physician can read these statistics and adjust the setting as required. It is possible to set and store up to 5 different protocols for PCA including names of drugs. The cable and switch provided with machines enables the patient to activate the bolus incase of emergency without accessing the key pad switches. A safety lock out time can be programmed on the machine to limit the use of such bolus infusion by patient.

BodyGuard 323 a highly compact light weight (Just 320gm) with out battery is an FDA approved pump for precise infusion of medication and fluids requiring continuous or intermittent delivery through clinically acceptable routes of administration including intravenous, subcutaneous, percutaneous, interarterial, epidural and enteral.

The equipment is intended for patients who require maintenance medication, analgesics, PCA therapy paranteral and enteral nutrition fluids, chemotherapeutic agents and general fluids therapy in hospital and homecare environments. The BodyGuard comes in two parts. The pump and charger and is fitted with rechargeable Li-ion battery. A fully charged battery will run the pump for 175hrs @ 1 ml/hr or 35hrs @ 15ml/hr. BodyGuard pump has a unique piston pumping mechanism the flow rate is 0.1ml to 100ml/hr in with 0.1ml increments in PCA mode and 0.1 to 1200ml/hr in other modes. It has got a provision for a total time setting of 100hrs and the accuracy is ± 3%. This pump comes with a comprehensive range of alarm conditions for any malfunction with error nature displayed on the screen. The pump has got wide acceptance and appreciation from major hospitals
