Manipal Hospital introduces institute of liver and digestive disorders

Bangalore's first integrated unit in liver transplants and bariatric surgery

Manipal Hospital has introduced Manipal Institute of Liver and Digestive Disorders (MILDD), Bangalore’s first dedicated unit to provide comprehensive treatment of liver and digestive diseases. The integrated unit comprise gastroenterologists, gastrointestinal surgeons, therapeutic endoscopists, interventional radiologists, pathologists, intensivists, junior doctors, dedicated nurses and para-medical staff. The trained gastrointestinal surgeons will be able to perform liver transplantation, liver resection, advanced bile duct, gall bladder, pancreatic gastro-intestinal and bariatric surgery for morbid obesity, laparoscopic surgery for achalasia cardia, gastro oesophageal reflux disorders, gastro intestinal, colonic, gall bladder, liver, pancreas and biliary diseases. Dr Nagendra Swamy, Group Medical Director, Manipal Health Systems said, “Manipal Health Systems, which follows a philosophy to offer the best in medical care, is proud to offer city's first dedicated centre to treat liver and digestive disorders with focus on liver transplant and bariatric Surgery.”

Said Dr KNK Shetty, Consultant and Head of Gastroenterology, "Management of liver and digestive disease has vastly improved recently but at the same time it has become complex as we have seen proliferation of different treatment modalities, so it is very important for different specialist to work as a team to achieve excellent results and provide cost-effective treatment which will be beneficial to the patient.

Said Dr Sadiq S Sikora, Consultant and Head of Surgical Gastroenterology, Former Additional Professor, Surgical Gastroenterology, SGPGIMS, Lucknow, “Worldwide, there is move from minimally invasive surgery to minimally mutilating or organ preserving surgery.”
