Ruby Hall Clinic Treats First Case Of IGRT In India
EHM News Bureau
The department of Radiation Oncology at the Ruby Hall Clinic's Cancer Center
performed the first successful application of the Image Guided Radiotherapy
(IGRT) technology in India by treating a seven-year-old boy of brain tumor.
Said Dr Kumara Swamy, Chief Radiation Oncologist, who performed the procedure,
"With its latest amenities, Ruby Hall Cancer Center has become the first
hospital in India to successfully execute the IGRT technology. Ruby Hall Clinic
is the first hospital to install IGRT technology in Asia and fifth in the entire
world."
IGRT eradicates all the traditional drawbacks of cancer treatment and provides
accurate and targeted treatment to cancer patients. IGRT is a new scientifically
advanced radiotherapy for cancer patients. Earlier, treatment by radiotherapy
would locate the approximate location of the tumour and involve giving radiation
to the surrounding healthy cells. IGRT uses the latest technology, which helps
identify and map the exact shape and position of the tumour and helps doctors
in administrating the therapy with precision and perfection.
"The IGRT goes beyond the traditional method, which eradicates all cells
in the area. Its 3D imaging focuses on just those cells affected by cancer,
rather than all the cells in the area, and thus protecting the healthy cells,"
said Dr Swamy.
