Medixair - Sterilising The Air You Breathe

Infection And Contamination

Microorganisms that usually cannot survive outdoors due to natural factors such as sunlight and temperature extremes, find ideal conditions in indoor environments, where they grow and spread rapidly. Misuse and over-prescription of antibiotics have led to new resistant strains of microorganisms. Together, this poses a significant threat to human health and severe financial strain on healthcare systems worldwide.

There are two principal infectious contaminations - Contact and Inhalation. While hand washing and surface disinfection are vital activites in combating these risks, little has been done to reduce risks due to inhalation of airborne organisms.

Background

The MedixairTM unit was initially designed and developed as a tool against terrorist attacks with weapons grade Anthrax agents. This amazing unit is capable of destroying more than 99.999 per cent of microorganisms in the air.

UV Technology - A Solution To Airborne Infection

Ultra-violet light occurs naturally in sunlight and may be divided into three bands - A, B and C. Of these, UV-C is the shortest and most powerful. At the specific wavelength of 257.3 nm (2,573 angstrom) it is proven to be deadly to viruses, bacteria and moulds. This occurs when the UV-C light penetrates the nucleus, disrupting the DNA so that cell reproduction cannot take place, killing the organism.

MedixairTM exposes air passing through the unit's radiation chamber to an intense amount of UV energy (23,868 µw.sec/cm2) capable of eradicating even the most resistant microorganisms. Four UV-C tubes arranged in a mathematically designed reflective chamber, controlled airspeed and lengthwise flow of air in close proximity to the tubes, provides maximum killing power even for the toughest bacteria, germs, spores and moulds.

Efficacy - Microbiology

MedixairTM has been exhaustively tested under field and laboratory conditions. A range of trials performed by Microsearch Laboratories - an independent UKAS accredited laboratory - employed a number of different test protocols to measure the machine's efficacy. Tests against both airborne and normally static organisms proved equally effective across a wide range of genera including gram positive and gram negative bacteria, yeasts and moulds.

As a further demonstration of the unit's performance, trials were also carried out within the High Dependency Unit of a leading hospital owned and operated by BMI Healthcare, the UK's largest independent healthcare provider. Air sampling was carried out before and after the units were operated and the results clearly demonstrated a significant contribution to atmospheric treatment in a clinical environment.

Efficacy - Airflow Dynamics

A key measure in the effectiveness of an air sterilisation unit is its ability to fully circulate all the air in a room, ensuring a uniform and continuous distribution. To evaluate the unit's performance, QiniteQ plc - Europe's largest science and technology organisation - used advanced computational fluid dynamics to determine the ability of a single MedixairTM unit to process the air in a standard test room. The results demonstrated that the unit's operations created a thermally-driven airflow that fully circulated and processed the air throughout the whole room. These independent research reports clearly prove the unit's efficacy in eradication of organisms, delivering air circulation and to provide total confidence in its ability to 'Engineer Air Sterility'.
