HOSMAT Conducts 1st Computer-assisted Knee Replacement In South India

EHM News Bureau

Computer-assisted rotating platform knee replacement surgery has reached South India through Bangalore-based HOSMAT. Known as the High Flex rotating platform knee replacement surgery, it is mimimally invasive, just like a keyhole surgery. The conventional techniques do not allow one to squat, sit cross-legged or even kneel. But all this is possible now. The new technology, also known as Mobile Bearing High Bending technique, is the only one to give the combination of high knee flexion and rotation. "Earlier, knee surgeries would give a flexion of around 120-125 degrees, but with this, the level has increased to around 140 degrees," says Dinesh Madhavan, General Manager, HOSMAT.

After undergoing surgery through the rotating technique, the patient can now be discharged within five to six days, unlike 10-15 days using the conventional ones. "Now, one can walk on his/her own (without a walking stick) in around 15 days. Previously people used to take almost a month to walk without any support," adds Madhavan.

The computer navigation system helps in doing an incision with exact precision. Computer can identify the shape and size of the joint from various angles. "Manually, it is possible to go wrong by two to five degrees, but never with this technique," avers Madhavan.

This technology is especially helpful for younger generation that is actively involved in sports or other physical activities. It is painless and very suitable for people upto the age of 65 years. One can soon get back to normal life routines after undergoing a knee surgery by this computer-navigated system.

Purchased from Brainlab, the whole installation has costed around Rs 2.2 crore.
