Orthopaedic Surgeon Introduces Advanced CNS

Mumbai-based orthopaedic surgeon specialising in computer assisted knee replacement surgery, Dr Tejas Upasani, has introduced an advanced Computer Navigation System (CNS) at Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai.

The Ci-II equipment, which is the first of its kind in India, is imported from the UK. The software is from the US. In addition to having the usual advantages of a navigation system, the equipment has the additional benefits of ligament tensioner, in which a rotating platform is used at an angle of 150 degrees thus helping in aligning the ligament accurately. This allows a patient to squat and even sit cross-legged.

"The equipment also has Minimally Invasive Knee Software, with which minimally invasive knee replacement can be done more accurately, with smaller scars and with a faster recovery," says Dr Upasani. An integrated software for high flexion knees (RPF)also helps in lengthening the life of high flexion knee prosthesis. A faster workflow and a foot switch also reduce the surgical time, which is around one to two hours.

"The cost for such a surgery is approximately Rs 1.8 lakh per RPF," adds Dr Upasani, who has undergone specialised training for doing computer assisted knee replacement at Perth, Australia.
