A Salubrious Haven Of Natural Health
Raigad-based Ayurvedic Cardiac Rehabilitation Centre tries
to create a complete lifestyle change, says Jayata Sharma
Panchkarma Centre At Madhavbaug
|
Madhavbaug is where ancient Ayurvedic healing methods are
merged with a contemporary and scientific approach. Patients suffering from
a chronic or temporary heart ailment can seek immediate relief by recouping
at Madhavbaug, a cardiac rehabilitation centre 60 km from Mumbai, at Khopoli
in Raigad district of Maharashtra.
Madhavbaug is three acres of green pasture which houses nine eco-friendly mud
cottages with thatched roofs (made by specialists from Kolkata), mango orchards,
meditation centre and a Panchkarma centre.
The brain behind the Rs-45-lakh-project is late Ayurveda Dr
Madhav Sane. Now, his son, Ayurveda Dr Rohit Sane, mans the centre. The architect
and designer of the Centre is Trupti Jadhav, while the landscape architect is
R Ganesh. The overall project was handled by Hosmac India Pvt Ltd.
Started in January this year, the Centre has so far handled 65 cases, with a
success rate of 70-80 per cent. The Centre has had patients visiting from city
and also out-station. "We had patients coming from Taiwan and Udaipur,"
informs Dr Rohit Sane, an MBBS and MD in Alternate Medicine from the US.
How It Helps
What is the need such a centre? According to an India-specific study by WHO,
around 90 patients die per hour in India due to heart diseases. "People
should know that heart attacks can be prevented easily. We have Ayurvedic heart
specialists, and prevention and wellness experts to help reduce chances of heart
attacks," Dr Sane says.
Patients come to know about the Centre through the chain of Sane clinics in
and around Mumbai. Patients have to undergo a stress test and a 2D Echo, and
only if the report shows need of treatment, are they directed to the Centre.
Grades of the New York Health Association are utilised to decide on the programmes
for patients.
The
Centre is strictly a place for cardiac patients and not a place for having a
quick massage and relaxation. "Patients wanting to relax are sent back,"
clarifies Dr Sane.
"Human body is made of 'Panch Mahabhoota' ie five elements of air, water,
fire, earth and ether (sky). Keeping this in mind, we have designed the treatment
called the Panchkarma therapy through which heart is equipped to take more stress,"
says Dr Sane.
If you thought that patients are given oil-free herbal food,
you are mistaken. Patients are served vegetarian food with moderate amounts
of oil and spices. They are also given Ayurvedic churnas, prepared in the FDA-approved
Sane Ayurvedic Lab.

Kick-starting The Day
The Dincharya (daily schedule), which starts at 4.30 in the morning, consists
of:
Dantadhawan: The first step utilises an herbal twig
to brush the teeth with neem, arjun or other herbs as per patients' problem.
Jivhanirlekhan: A vertical section of the same herbal
twig can be used for scraping and cleansing the tongue.
Detoxification: Nasya, anjan, kawal, gandush, dhumapaan
these ancient medicinal procedures are practised every morning to detoxify
the five senses of the human body to keep the heart free from problems.
Role Of Meditation
Madhavbaug ensures the exploration of one's inner world and
helps discover peace, serenity and clarity of mind through various methods of
meditation. The Centre has unique concepts of Nakshatra Van and Navagraha Van,
where trees planted according to your constellation release spiritual energy.
Fire and water meditation are already practised here.

1. Udwartan: An herbal powder massage, the
direction of which is towards the heart for increasing the blood flow
towards it.
2. Swedan: A steam bath, but unlike sauna,

is generated by boiling various herbs, which are grown at the centre itself,
and directed towards the steam bed.
3. Hrid-dhara: Kadha is made from the herbs
and placed in the pre-cordial/chest area. This is for the blood flow to
be normal.

No Entry
There are a few restrictions on the kind of cases the Centre takes up. Patients
with physical disability, an ejection fraction of less than 25 per cent, chronic
fever, and a root block in angiography are not admitted. But there is no restriction
on age. The oldest patient cured so far was over 65.
In The Pipeline
Two royal cottages are coming up at the Centre; wherein patients will have a
separate space for herbal baths. An S-shaped underground meditation centre is
being made for earth meditation. For air meditation, a wooden way will be constructed
35-40 feet above the ground level. There are also plans for more rehab centres,
dedicated to various diseases. For instance, one centre dedicated only to cure
diabetes may see light of the day in some time.
