Jaslok Inaugurates Dept Of Preventive Cardiology

EHM News Bureau - Mumbai

Jaslok Hospital recently opened its department of preventive cardiology, cardiac rehabilitation and sports medicine. This department will not only take care of patients who have undergone surgery or procedures like angioplasty and valve replacement/repair, but spread greater awareness among different populations and also provide risk factor analysis. The department is a vision of Dr Ashwin B Mehta, Head of Department, Cardiology.

Said Dr Pratima Rajan, Head, Department of Preventive Cardiology, Cardiac Rehabilitation & Sports Medicine, Jaslok Hospital, “Ongoing care of cardiac patients is essential. If not provided timely, there is a strong possibility of the patient coming back with another episode, even after surgery or angioplasty. Cardiac Rehabilitation is designed to provide care by addressing the risk factors, helping patients cope with stress and strengthening their heart.”

Cardiac Rehabilitation, which is unique to each patient situation, is an option for all age groups because of improved programmes and close medical monitoring. Studies have shown that patients with cardiac problems can be made to reach near normalcy with the rehabilitation programme.

Said Dr Ashwin B Mehta, Head of Department, Cardiology, Jaslok Hospital, “The Cardiac Rehabilitation programme is directed towards patient care in totality. Stress release is accomplished through psychoanalysis, counselling and a special stress management programme. Supervised exercise programme trains the heart to become more fuel-efficient.”
