Bombay Hospital Installs 64 Slice CT Machine

EHM News Bureau - Mumbai

The department of imaging at Bombay Hospital recently installed a 64 slice CT machine, Somatom-64 manufactured by Siemens, the latest in fast evolving imaging modalities. It allows for faster and better cross-sectional imaging of the anatomy with the minutest of details. It is non-invasive, safe and renders easy access to all body parts.

Says Dr Inder Talwar, Head, MRI and CT, Bombay Hospital, "To deliver efficient patient care, clinical expertise and to excel amidst constant demand, we need diagnostic capabilities that are patient-friendly, easy to use and fast, allowing a comprehensive evaluation of the disease status."

The state-of-the-art technology has revolutionised non-invasive cardiac and vascular imaging, enabling visualisation of small vessels of the heart without any need for invasive intervention. "The entire heart can be imaged within 12 seconds through this technology. Even a whole body imaging can be performed within 30 seconds," says Dr Talwar.

Previously, the only method of visualising the small coronary vessels was catheter angiography, which involves the insertion of an arterial catheter with its various risks and complications. "Multislice CT now allows the imaging of these vessels with only a peripheral venous contrast injection making it much safer," explains Dr Talwar.

This non-invasive imaging of coronary arteries allows one to detect the disease in its earlier reversible stages, when the patient is asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic so that appropriate treatment and lifestyle changes can be adopted before myocardial damage occurs.

The cost of Multi Slice CT is Rs five crore. The cost per heart CT scan is Rs 10,000, while that of routine ones are between Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000

Multi Slice CT have revolutionised imaging of other body parts as well. Images can be acquired in multiple planes, allowing better depiction of areas of complex anatomy. CT angiography allows vascular assessment, while 3D CT is invaluable for assessment of patients with complex fractures. CT endoscopy is useful for evaluation of bowel and tracheo-bronchial tree.

The cost of Multi Slice CT is Rs five crore. The cost per heart CT scan is Rs 10,000, while that of routine ones are between Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000.
