Manipal Hospital Conducts Workshop On Neuro-Endovascular Surgery

Archana Ravikumar - Bangalore

The Manipal Institute held a one-day workshop on Neuro-Endovascular surgery for Neurological Disorders at Manipal Hospital.

Dr Jay U Howington, Associate Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery and Director of the stroke programme at the Savannah Neurological Institute at Savannah, Georgia, participated in the surgery workshop along with a team led by Dr N K Venkataramana, Director - Manipal Institute for Neurological Disorders (MIND).

The workshop included the endovascular surgery being performed with lectures and discussions on the same. Patients harbouring aneurysms and arterio-venous malformation underwent endovascular procedures during the workshop. Strokes are common clinical problems and strike without a warning. “The fundamental basis of all stroke treatment is prompt medical attention since early recognition, investigation and treatment is the most appropriate route for enhancing maximum recovery from stroke,” said Dr Venkataramana.

A new endovascular suite was inaugurated on this occasion at Manipal Hospital. “We offer state-of-the-art endovascular treatment for strokes and other neurovascular diseases like aneurysms, Arterio Venous Malformation (AVMs) etc,” said Dr Swaroop Gopal, Consultant Neuro-Endovascular surgeon at MIND. “The workshop and the visit of Dr Howington is the continuing effort of the MIND in creating awareness and availability of the latest technology among the public for diagnosis and early treatment of stroke or ‘brain attack’ forms an important step, as is modification of other risk factors to prevent stroke,” said Dr Nagendra Swamy, Director, Medical Services and Postgraduate Studies, Manipal Hospital.

The management of cerebral aneurysms has seen a paradigm shift with the introduction of coil like devices for their treatment as an alternative to surgery in certain situations. The emergence of endovascular neurosurgeons is advancement in the management of cerebral aneurysms and other neurovascular problems. The endovascular neurosurgeon is a qualified neurosurgeon who is adept and trained to perform these procedures.
