Apex body of healthcare providers, insurers, TPAs in Mumbai & Delhi

Falaknaaz Syed - Mumbai

An apex body comprising of all segments involved in health insurance delivery, namely the healthcare providers, the four Public Sector General Insurance Companies, and TPA Association, will be formed in some time from now in Mumbai and Delhi. The apex body in both the regions will work towards solving issues pertaining to standardised MoU, cashless service, package deal pricing and standardisation.

The decision came about after the initiative of the TPA Association to grade hospitals and nursing homes to introduce package charges for various medical services in Mumbai and Delhi. The move was vehemently opposed by the medical community at large in both the regions with the Delhi healthcare providers even dragging the Insurance Regulatory Development Authority of India (IRDA), TPAs and National Insurance Company Ltd to court for introducing standardisation and package charges.

A point noteworthy is that the committees in both the regions will have a representative from the Consumer Co-ordination Council.

Healthcare associations of Mumbai joining the committee are Association of Hospitals (AoH), a body of 41 trust run hospitals in Mumbai, Association of Medical Consultants, a body of 5300 consultants in and around Mumbai and Bombay Nursing Home Association (BNHA), a body of private nursing homes. While the healthcare providers in Delhi will have representatives from the Delhi Medical Association, The Delhi Nursing Forum (a body of 600 nursing homes), Indian Medical Association (IMA). Mumbai healthcare providers have also invited the IRDA to be part of the committee, informed Dr Suresh Rao, President of AMC. Though a similar invitation extended by the Delhi healthcare providers has been rejected by IRDA.
