Shoulder joint replacement surgery conducted at Hiranandani Hospital

EHM News Bureau - Mumbai

Dr Sanjeev Jain, consultant orthopaedic and joint replacement surgeon at Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital, did a shoulder replacement surgery on a 60-year old lady at Hiranadani Hospital.

The surgery is significant as joint replacement of the shoulder is a rare surgery as compared to the commonplace hip and knee replacement. Besides this, there are very few surgeons in India who can perform this highly specialised procedure of surgery.

“The 60-year-old Rahima Rafi was disabled because of shoulder pain due to rheumatoid arthritis for the past many years. The ball of her arthritic shoulder was replaced by the most modern shoulder joint implant during the shoulder replacement surgery. A very high quality plastic called as polyethylene replaced the other part of joint-socket,” informs Dr Jain.

“The advantage of this operation was that it is painless. She has now acquired a good degree of movement, enabling her perform daily household activities,” adds Dr Jain.

Arthritis is a condition, where cartilage at the joint surface of bone wears away. It is this cartilage, which normally makes the bone ends slippery and helps the joint to move smoothly without friction. Since this cartilage does not regenerate, the joint remains painful.
