Former footballer sets up hospital for the middle-class

Joy Roy Choudhury - Kolkata

It’s an act of kindness from a former footballer of international repute, that would be remembered by the healthcare industry.

Chuni Goswami, captain of the 1962 Asian Games and hero of many a football battles, along with a renowned surgeon Dr Purnendu Roy, have set up Genesis, a 75-bed hospital off the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass in this city. The hospital has recently opened its doors to the public and would be fully operational soon.

Sudipta Goswami, CEO and son of the former footballer, “From my initial days, I dreamt of setting up a hospital for the people who needed advanced quality healthcare but couldn’t afford it. We teamed up with Dr Purnendu Roy and pulled up our personal resources to set up this hospital.”

The project of East India Healthcare Private Limited, Genesis will be an address where ‘affordable healthcare facilities are available for the middle class’ said the CEO.

“The vision of the hospital is to serve the masses who are in the mid-income group. Packages will be cheaper than the prevailing market rates, and expensive invasive procedures will be avoided wherever possible,” said Goswami.

The centre will initially concentrate on three main specialities -laparoscopic surgery, gynaecology and obstetrics and urology. It has four operation theatres with post-operative rooms.

Provision for day-care facilities will be available when operations do not call for an overnight stay. The extra care also comes through the high dependency units (HDU), the supportive system for surgical patients, and the neo-natal ICU of international standards.
