Ganga Ram Hospital to host 7th international trauma anaesthesia conference

EHM News Bureau - Delhi

Sir Ganga Ram hospital is hosting the 7th Conference of International Trauma Anaesthesia and Critical Care Society (Indian Chapter) from September 26 to 28, 2003. The theme of the conference is ‘Critical Care of Trauma Patients in the New Millennium’.

It is a unique congregation of experts in trauma care from the world over. The conference is also an opportune time for young doctors and professionals to interact with experts and learn about the new advancements and methods in trauma care.

It will be particularly useful to people in trauma management viz. anaesthesiologists, surgeons, pulmonologists, physicians, trauma nurses, emergency technicians and hospital administrators.

Critical care providers play a crucial role in trauma management, therefore, the conference will revolve around operative care and critical care aspects of trauma management.

Experts and leaders in trauma and critical care management will share their work and experience. There will be a wide range of thematic sessions, tutorials, symposia, pro-con debates, expert’s views, sessions and poster presentations. About 800-900 participants from across the world are likely to attend the conference.

The conference is divided into three parts; Continuing Medical Education (CME), scientific programmes and workshops on trauma management. The conference will start with CME on trauma, emergency and disaster medicine, and trauma teaching and training. This will cover the current and global technical advancements and modalities in trauma management.

Eminent national and international speakers will talk about subjects pertaining to organisation of trauma services in developing countries, which will include trauma teaching and training, organisation of a primary response network for trauma, pre-hospital care and receiving a trauma patient in the ER.

Trauma CPR and air management in trauma etc will also be discussed at length, under resuscitation of a polytrauma patient. Disaster medicine is another important part of CME, where participants will get first hand information on community education and preparedness. Since terrorism and war have become ugly reality in today’s world, it is necessary to understand the proper handling of the victims and the injured.

Participants will be taught about the pitfalls in early care and management. International experts will give their views on the subject from data collected and studies done in the past. There will be thematic sessions, symposia and pro-con debates. Thematic sessions will include cerebral trauma, thoracic trauma, and orthopaedic and spinal trauma. Similarly, in symposia, topics on pathophysiology of sepsis and septic shock management and ARD sepsis etc., will be discussed extensively.

The topics for pro-con debates are:

  • Pulmonary artery catheter has outlived its utility
  • Protocol-directed weaning is better than physician-directed weaning

Also, there will be a meet-the-expert session in which, both Indian and international experts will share their experience in various situations in trauma. For nurses, there is a special session on nursing skills in trauma and critical care. Alongside, the paediatric trauma has been given due importance that will cover new developments in paediatric resuscitation, accident prevention strategies in children and trauma management priorities in children. Participants will also take part in poster competition.

On the concluding day, there will be three workshops on ICU procedures that will include airway management, cardiac management and percutaneous tracheotomy, where, participants will be shown practical demonstration of the procedures by experts and will get hands-on experience of each technique on mannequins and animal model preparation.

About a 100 students have already been enrolled for the various events.
