AAPI selects three burns centres
of excellence in India

The American Association of
Physicians of Indian origin (AAPI), a consortium of
30,000 Indian physicians based in the US, working on
standardising burns care in India has selected four
burns centres across the country as their burns centre
for excellence. These centres would be utilised as resource
centres for educational activities and for training
personnel in those region for burns management.
The four centres are the Lokmanya
Tilak Municipal General Hospital (Mumbai), L G hospital
(Ahmedabad), Lok Manya Tilak hospital and Maulana Azad
Medical College (New Delhi). Said Dr L Hanumadass, chairman,
task force on burns care in India and former director,
Summer Koch Burn Centre, US, The task force will
provide technical help and expertise in establishing
the centre at Ahmedabad. The cost of the project
is estimated to be close to 200,000 USD.
The funds will be raised
from NGOs and philanthropists both in the US and India.
We have received initial proposals and plans for the
project, he added. However, AAPI would not be
rendering any financial help to burns centre at Mumbai
and New Delhi. The task force would also select burns
centre in the eastern and southern regions of India.
AAPI also intends to form a burns registry in India.
In India around 7 lakh burns patients are hospitalised
and 1.2 lakh die annually due to burns.
