Health notes from Mumbai

L M Patel Rotary Eye hospital inaugurated

In the era of cardiac hospitals, an ophthalmology hospital is a welcome change. An advanced ophthalmology hospital, L M Patel Rotary Eye hospital, a project of the Bombay North-West Rotary Public Charitable Trust was inaugurated in Mumbai recently.The hospital is fully equipped with best of the facilities and equipment, state-of-the-art modern operation theatre and manned by a team of 35 doctors and well -trained para-medical staff. Said Dr Nitin Malkan, chairman and president of the project, “Our target is to ensure better eye care for the needy, prevention of blindness, and implementing ophthalmologic activities of public health significance.” For those deserving the hospital would also provide free treatment, he added.

Well-known ophthalmic surgeons would perform cataract surgery with phacoemulsification, glaucoma detection, squint surgeries, computerized eye testing, laser-assisted surgeries and vitreo retinal surgeries at the hospital, he said. “We have started our community preventative activity against loss of vision, and improved eye care and services for the common man. And, our motto is, Save eyes: Spread light,” said Mr. Sharad L Patel, Charter President of the Rotary Club of Bombay North-West.

Mauritian hair grafting

New lifestyle magazine for doctors

A new glossy, quarterly life-style magazine “Within Normal Limits” was launched recently. Endorsed by Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre, the magazine is for doctors. Not containing medical news, though, but taking us through the lives of different giants of medical style. According to the editor, Suchrita Mukherjee, “It is the a magazine that captures the hope and spirit of medicine A magazine that is fun and one that urges a doctor to widen his perspective.” The magazine has profiles of doctors, celebrity writers, with dollops of humour and bedside travelogues. You even have doctors striking poses as a model! The magazine is not just for doctors, Mukherjee insists, but targeted at every sensitive, educated individual who is interested to know about a profession that very often touches his life.

First live free replacement surgery

A live joint knee replacement surgery from Adelaide, Australia was webcast to orthopaedic surgeons in Mumbai recently. Dr Gred Keene, a leading orthopaedic surgeon associated with SportsMed-SA, Adelaide operated a patient using the minimally invasive “Prevention Unit”, a uni-compartmental knee system (UK). This unique wencast was utilised for professional education of orthopaedic surgeons. The event was interactive with Indian surgeons posing queries to Dr Gred Kenee during the surgery. “Preservation unit” has been recently launched in India by DePuy Orthopaedics, a division of Johnson and Johnson.
