With
MCI trying to regulate hospital management institutes,
Express Healthcare Management seeks the opinion of a
few experts
Dr
V Ranjan,
HOD, Academic section,
Symbiosis Centre for Healthcare, Pune
It would be a good move, if MCI regularises the courses
of distance education also., with each of the three
institutes having different syllabi. From marketing,
finance, patient management, to labour laws, a hospital
management student, should know everything. But, it
is unfortunate that some institutes do not teach these.
So MCI regulation would be welcome.
Dr (Col) S K P Matwankar,
Member
of Academy of Hospital Administrators,
Director
Operations, H N Hospital, Mumbai
MCI being a body of medical professionals, MCI regulated
syllabus would give a holistic view of hospital administration,
both clinical and non-clinical. Many hospital management
institutes lay more emphasis on managerial aspect of
hospital administration, neglecting topics like Consumer
Protection Act, labour laws and others. MCI is likely
to strike a balance between the clinical and non-clinical
administration.
Dr Vivek Desai,
Faculty member, TISS,
MD, HOSMAC Consultancy, Mumbai
Most of the hospital management institutes have good
syllabi. Why make them follow a uniform Indian syllabus?
I don't think it would be a good move.
Major General (Dr) S K Biswas,
Founder-Member, Academy of Hospital Administrators,
Delhi
With the changing trends, hospital administration course
syllabus should be updated, which MCI has taken the
lead. It is a good move.
Dr K Narayan,
Medical super-intendent, Tata Memorial Hospital and
Research Centre, Mumbai
The regulation would bring accountability of the institutes,
which are completely unregulated. Some of the students
coming out of these institutes only manage to get a
front office job.
