UP tops the list of polio cases in the world

Uttar Pradesh tops the list of polio cases in the world, posing a stiff challenge for the state and central governments as well as the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The total number of polio cases in the state stood at 428 while all over India the figures were 509. Meanwhile the figure stood at 540 in the world.

Officials of the state health department also indicated that out of the total 428 cases detected this year, 282 were from the minority community in certain specific districts.

The government had already completed a mop up drive in areas where the polio cases were detected, they said. Azamgarh district topped the list with 44 polio cases this year followed by 27 in Ambedkarnagar, 20 in bijnour, 19 in Mau, 18 in Kanpur dehat and 14 in Bhariach, sources said. In total, 57 of the total 70 districts were found to have polio cases. Mr Singh said the government with the financial assistance of those who had provided Rs 12 crore for the pulse polio drive in the state. The government would deploy 57521 teams comprising 1,72,564 vaccinators and 1,7253 supervisors at 8,3282 centres during the four-phase drive, he added.
