Kolkata to host annual pathologists & microbiologists meet

Kolkata: Kolkata will host the 51st annual conference of the Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists (IAPM), the apex organization of the pathologists and microbiologists of the country at the Science City Auditorium. ’APCON 2002’ is to be held from December 13-15, 2002.

Dr (Prof) Subir Kumar Dutta, organizing secretary, APCON 2002 said, "The conference programme and pre-conference CMEs and workshops have been planned on subjects, which will be useful in the day to day practice of the microbiologists and pathologists, and at the same time the latest and the most sophisticated technology would be exhibited during the event. IAPM would also organize an exhibition at the Science City showcasing the latest and most sophisticated technology in use."

MDRF-ADA hold post graduate course in diabetology

Chennai: The American Diabetes Association (ADA), the world’s largest professional body in diabetes health care and research, in association with the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF), Chennai conducted a Post-Graduate Course on Diabetes in Chennai from recently. The course was organized by Dr V Mohan, President of MDRF and Dr Rema Mohan, Vice President, MDRF and inaugurated by Mr Frank Wierichs, Vice Consul-American Consulate, Chennai.

The eight scientific sessions included lectures on complications, management and prevention of diabetes, delivered by eleven eminent American faculty. In his talk on ‘Diabetes care in America’, Dr Richard Khan highlighted the fact that even in the US the guidelines for diabetes care were being met in less than 50 per cent of the patients, including those treated by diabetes specialists.

Perinatal medicine meet

Mumbai: Mumbai Obstetrics & Gynaecological Society (MOGS) recently organised a perinatal medicine meet -- "The cutting edge of perinatology – an evidence based approach to "routine obstetrics" recently. Dr P C Mohapatra, Asstt. Prof. from Cuttack highlighted on the dilemmas faced by doctors and parents while dealing with a dying baby and talked about ethical and moral issues facing doctors. He also explained about the role of perinatal infections and perinatal asphyxia and concluded his talk saying that the issue of dying foetus has more of questions than answers and more of controversies than consensus.

Dr Sadhna Desai, spoke on hematological disorders in pregnancy and especially the problems it creates in perinatal period. Dr Renu Chauhan, endocronlogist, P D Hinduja hospital emphasised on the importance of thyroid testing as part of pregnancy tests and Dr Gita Gidwani, consultant gynaecologist, Cleveland Clinic Foundation spoke on the global decline of teenage pregnancy. Dr D K Tank, spoke on antenatal surveillance of fetus using the non stress test. The organizing chairpersons of the programme were Dr N Chauhan, Sion hospital and Dr Jaydeep Tank.
