A Special Feature on
Medical Equipment Technology
Intregated
OR technology from Karl Storz
In
June 2000, Karl Storz Endoscopy, a world leader in endoscopic
technology, introduced a revolutionary PC-based system
that allows surgeons and OR staff to control the operating
room and communicate with the outside world.
OR1
is the most important development in minimally invasive
surgery since laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Most operating
rooms were built 15 to 25 years ago and were designed
for open surgery. Surgeons doing minimally invasive
procedures have very different needs in terms of optimal
viewing angle of monitors and lighting. Whether its
a minimally invasive or open procedure, OR 1 helps the
OR team control the environment and flow of patient
information.
With one-finger touch, the surgeon can display X-ray
images on a screen, access patient records, review lab
results or tissue biopsies and control room and surgical
lighting. OR 1 also lets surgeons transfer images to
physicians outside the OR and gives them access to the
Internet and video conferencing.
OR1 represents the first use of PC-based technology
to control the modern operating room. Central to the
value of OR1 is that it provides standardization wherein
every component is integrated into a single, optimized
system.
Karl Storz Endoscopy has also introduced a new line
of hinged bipolar grasping forceps featuring reusable
modular components. Also new is a complete video intubation
system which includes flexible intubation scopes and
a MacIntosh intubation blade.
