Unique medico-legal sessions in the offing at SCHC seminar

The Symbiosis Centre of Health Care (SCHC), Pune has organised a national seminar on Medicolegal Systems and Hospital/ Healthcare Management. This year, around 954 students enrolled for the above courses from all over India will be attending this seminar to be held between 10- 12 May 2002 at Symbiosis Vishwabhavan, Pune.
The sessions will be conducted simultaneously on medicolegal and healthcare management issues. The three-day event will throw light on changing health care management scenario.

Today one can say that the image of a ‘Doctorsaab’ of yesteryear is tarnished to a certain extent. With the rising number of litigations against doctors, thanks to the Consumer Protection Act, frequently they come under the purview of criminal law. To get a better insight into this aspect, the seminar has a session on ‘Doctor & criminal law,’ by Adv Dhairysheel Patil, past president- Bar Council of India.

Medical ethics has taken a back seat in the present world of commercialism and fierce, intense professionalism. Addressing this changing tide of medical practice where financial gains override conscientious gains, T N Seshan, former chief election commissioner of India, is addressing the students on ‘Hippocratisation of medical practice.’
Labour problems have been a perennial cause of worry to all the establishments. With the changing concept of managing a hospital on the lines of any other industrial house, labour laws and problems unique to the hospital environment need a focused attention. Advocate Manjusha Kulkarni, legal advisor — Ruby Hall Clinic will be addressing this very pertinent aspect of hospital and healthcare management. A session on ‘Consent documentation & record keeping’ will be conducted by Dr Sanjay Gupte, chairman — Medico Legal Committee of FOGSI. It shall highlight these basic tenets of providing ethically and medicolegally sound healthcare services.
Effective communication skills is a basic prerequisite of good medical practice. Unfortunately, time, energy and inclination (not necessarily in that order !) prevent the doctor from establishing a good rapport with the patient. Miscommunication/poor communication is believed to sow the seed of distrust between the doctor and patient and is the genesis of many a litigations. Dr Sughandha Johar, a PhD in communication skills shall highlight this very important aspect of medical practice.

Income tax is the scourge of all well-to-do people, especially professionals. The white collared professionals that they are, doctors are always on the lookout for proper tax planning without falling into the rut of tax evasion. Rajiv Ranade, deputy commissioner — Income Tax dept. Pune will dwell on this all important financial matter.
In confirmation to the age old aphorism, that prevention is better than cure, Dr Vidya Yeravdekar, director — SCHC shall give useful hints on the preventive aspects of medico-legal litigations.

Advocate Lata Krishnamurthy shall be talking on an interesting aspect of confidentiality between the doctor and patient. This topic assumes significance especially in the light of the present scenario of HIV/ Aids. The practical component of this academic programme is the most important session entitled ‘Moot Court.’ Herein, hypothetical cases are tried exactly the way they would be staged in the consumer forum courts. This interesting session seeks to educate the doctor students on practical aspects of court proceedings and procedures. Constituting the Jury in these trial cases would be presidents of three state consumer forum ( as enlisted).

Lending a social dimension to these academic sessions is a workshop on female foeticide. The workshop shall highlight the social, legal and demographic implications of anti natal sex determination and subsequent termination of pregnancy in the event that it is a female child — female foeticide. Featuring in these deliberations will be — Dr Vidya Yeravdekar, Dr Chandakkar, dy.chief — Health Services, Pune Municipal Corporation; Dr Bhatlavande, jt., director — Medical Services, Govt. of Maharashtra and Dr Poornima Advani, chairperson — National Commission for Women, New Delhi.

The student delegates of the hospital and healthcare management course are in for an academic bonanza too. Besides sessions on technical subjects such as strategic management, risk management, managed healthcare, conducted by the eminent faculty of SCHC, the students would actually visit the various multispeciality hospitals of Pune such as Ruby Hall, Jehangir, Dinanath Mangeshkar, Sancheti, Joshi Hospital, KEM, Inlaks and Budhrani Hospitals etc. Here they would undertake a guided tour of the hospitals to get an insight into the functioning of various departments of a hospital. Professionals from hospital management and consultancy firms shall address the students on important aspects such as hospital waste management, medical audit and, planning and designing of a hospital.

A peripheral yet important dimension of quality healthcare services is the dietetic department of the hospital. Sushila Sharangdhar, chief dietician, Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai shall discuss management of a dietetics department in a multispeciality institutional hospital. The all important session for these future hospital managers would be an interactive panel discussion called, ‘Corporate healthcare strategies.’ The panelists would discuss the paradigm shift that is taking place in the healthcare sector with the entry of multinational industrial houses into this field. Panelists for this session are Amit Bagaria, CEO, Asian Health Services, Bangalore; Vishal Bali, GM — Wockhardt, Bangalore; Ratan Jalan, CEO — Apollo Hospitals and Lifestyle Ltd. Hyderabad and Dr V Ranjan, GM — Medical Services, Emcure Pharmaceuticals, Pune. The session would provide useful insights into the present requirements of the dynamic corporate healthcare sector. In the light of the opening up of the health insurance sector, a two hour session on ‘Insurance in the healthcare sector’ would do justice to this important component of the healthcare services.

The national seminar which is an amalgamation of two diverse yet important components of healthcare services will be a learning experience for the doctors, administrators, medicolegal consultants, students, healthcare managers and any/all such personnel who are responsible to formulate and influence policies in respective healthcare institutions.
