New anthrax scanning machine from ECIL
PTI - Hyderabad

At last, here is some respite from anthrax phobia. The Electronic Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) recently claimed to have developed a new scanning machine that would be able to detect any powdery substance, including anthrax spores.

Similar to the luggage scanning machines in airports but much smaller in size, the Conveyorised Parcel Viewer (ECR 419) is capable of detecting all powdery substances in either envelopes, bags or suitcases, company sources said.

Any envelope can be put through this machine and the colour images on a display screen would indicate the presence of powdery substance, if any, inside the envelope. Postal authorities can send all mails through this machine and isolate the envelopes containing powders which could be sent for analysis.

ECIL is planning to produce this machine on a large scale to meet the immediate security requirements of the country as well as planning to export these machines to US and other countries, the company sources said.

The images are first displayed in black and white. But the operator can add pseudo colours to ‘visually sniff’ for additional details. The machine has another feature like edge enhancement to help improve the definition of the object under screening.

The equipment is compact, light weigh, stand alone X-ray inspection system. The X-ray dose per inspection in the system is kept low by using 80KV compact X-ray generator designed indigenously, according to ECIL.
