Rare case treated at Apollo
P Ram Kumar

In its constant endeavour towards excellence in the medical field, Apollo Hospitals recently treated a rare case involving the procedure of renal angioplasty followed by stenting of the artery, on a patient with a single grafted kidney. This is the first time that such a case has been successfully treated in Andhra Pradesh, according to sources from the hospital. The sources told Express Healthcare Management that the patient, a 51-year-old woman surviving on a single grafted kidney, had initially developed high blood pressure (220/120). She was put on four different drugs by her doctor, with a tedious dosage pattern of 16 tablets per day to control her hypertension. Despite administering the doses, her BP continued to remain high at 190/120. It was only after getting her diagnostic tests done, which revealed that her grafted kidney had 99 per cent blockage in the artery thereby resulting in high blood pressure. Timely and urgent medical intervention was all that was needed to save her kidney and life. Dr P C Rath, director, cathlab and interventional cardiologist, Apollo Hospitals, with the support of Dr K S Nayak, consultant nephrologist carried out the renal angioplasty followed by stenting of the artery. During the procedure the block in the renal artery of the grafted kidney was dilated with the help of balloon and a special stent designed specifically for renal artery was implemented. This ensured a smooth flow of blood to the grafted kidney. Following the procedure, the patient’s condition was seen to stabilise and her kidney was fully functional within a period of two days, making her resume her normal activities, thereby proving the success of this surgical procedure.
