Two new services unveiled by Apollo
EHM Team

Emergency care is acknowledged to be the best in United States, and Apollo Hospitals has been working closely with the American Academy for Emergency Medicine in India, to establish Hyderabad as a model city for quality emergency care in the country

On the occasion of its 13th anniversary, Apollo Hospitals recently launched two new services comprising an easy to remember emergency telephone number (1066) and community first-aid providers (Life Savers Club).

The number ’1066’ is the first emergency network in the country to get an easy to remember four-digit emergency telephone number. The number has been already installed in Hyderabad and the same facility is to be extended in New Delhi, Chennai and Madurai. Over the next three months, this number will be available across the country, according to sources from the hospital. Hyderabad today, has ‘Hospital on Wheels’ placed at eight strategic locations in the twin cities - Jubilee Hills, Hyderguda, Vikrampuri, Kukatpally, Malakpet, Mehdipatnam, Public Gardens and Santosh Nagar. On calling 1066, one can reach the central control room located in Jubilee Hills, which in turn is linked to all the hospitals on wheels and emergency rooms at different locations by a dedicated wireless system.

On receiving a call, the hospital on wheels nearest to the victim is immediately dispatched and the emergency room of that particular area alerted. This enables the hospital to reach an emergency victim at the earliest and also the emergency rooms to receive and manage the victim without any time lag. The pre-hospital emergency services within the twin cities are being offered free of cost.

Emergency care is acknowledged to be the best in United States, and Apollo Hospitals has been working closely with the American Academy for Emergency Medicine in India, to establish Hyderabad as a model city for quality emergency care in the country. To bring the existing standards close to the American standards, Hyderabad needed an easy to remember telephone number similar to 911 in USA.

Emergencies mostly occur in the community away from doctors and medical facilities. Precious time is lost before the victim is shifted to a hospital, which could be fatal. To ensure immediate care, Apollo has taken up the responsibility of training individuals in the community in first-aid and providing them with first-aid kits. The entire mobile police force of the twin cities (Blue Colts, Rakshaks and Mobile Traffic Police) have already been trained and equipped to provide immediate first-aid. The hospital has now taken up schools, colleges and auto drivers and hopes to have at least 3000 ‘Life Savers’ in the twin cities by the end of year. These trained Life Savers, the pre-hospital emergency care personnel, and the in-hospital emergency personnel together form the ’Life Savers Brigade’ for Hyderabad. To provide an opportunity for all these, members interact with each other, discuss success and failure in various incidents and identify methods of further improving services.

And to keep them motivated to react on time, every time, Apollo Hospitals has launched the Life Savers Club. With the launch of these two components of emergency care, Hyderabad is on its way to becoming a model city for emergency care in the country, claim the hospital sources. “Although Apollo has been the driving force behind this, the Department of Telecommunications, the Police Department in the Twin Cities, Lifenet EMS International, United Kingdom, Royal College of General Practitioners, United Kingdom, and the American Academy for Emergency Medicine have all contributed significantly and helped and guided us reach this stage,” revealed the sources.
